4 Top Yorkie Training Issues (cont'd)  -  The Most Important Command Word
Teaching the Word "No"

“No” is one of the most important words that you will teach to your Yorkie.   This word will show your dog what is expected and will keep them safe.  You will use this command word for many circumstances.

You will show your Yorkie what is acceptable and not acceptable in the areas of:
  • Teething
  • Housetraining
  • Walking beside you
  • Barking
  • Nipping…and more
This word will also keep your dog safe.  When your Yorkie fully understands the meaning of this serious word, hearing you say it will keep them safe.  Some examples:
  • If your dog is about to cross the street and there is traffic
  • If your Yorkie is about to ingest something that would cause harm
Your dog does want to please you.  The Yorkshire Terrier is an affection, loving companion and is less stressed when there are guidelines in place to show the dog what is expected and how to behave.

”No” is the single most essential obedience word your dog will be trained to listen to.

Teaching the Obedience Command

How do you teach the word "No" to your Yorkshire Terrier?  This most serious training command should be put into action whenever your dog is doing something that you do not want them to do.  Do not say this unless you really mean it; otherwise it will lose its importance and your Yorkie will never understand the true meaning of the word.

This command must be said with the correct tone of voice.  You must say it as if you mean it.  However, do not yell and never hit your dog while saying it.

Do not even "tap" your dog with a rolled up paper, as some out-of-date training methods used to advise.  Your goal is not to make your dog afraid of you, but to respect you.

When you give this command word,  say it in a tone that shows your Yorkie that you are serious, physically stop your dog from continuing the behavior and then offer an alternative.

For example:

•    If your dog is walking ahead of you, say the command word "No" and stop walking.   Only after they sit and calm down should you continue walking.
•    If your Yorkie nips at you, train them to stop this by commanding "No", act as if the nip hurt and offer your dog a chew toy.
•    If your Yorkie shows actions that they are about to eliminate inside the home, say "No" in a firm tone to get your dog’s attention and swiftly pick them up and bring them outside or to their litter box.
Use it only when needed.  Repetition is what will teach your dog what is appropriate, correct behavior.
