Can I use Mosquito spray on my Yorkie?  Should I ?
Dogs, just like humans, can and do get bitten by Mosquitoes.   However, a Mosquito bite on a dog is much more than a nuisance and a bit of an itch !

This can be a year round problem, depending on where you live.   If your Yorkie is bit by a Mosquito, several things may happen:

  • The dog will have irritation and itch at the area of the bite
  • Your Yorkie may have an allergic reaction to the bite
  • Heartworms are spread by Mosquitoes.  This is the number 1 way in which a dog will develop Heartworms.
Because a dog can live for many years without showing symptoms of Heartworms, as the parasties sliently destroy the dog before symtoms show,  your best prevention is to make sure that your Yorkie receives regular Heartworm protection.

However, to go back to the issue of Mosquitoes!  Yes, even if you are protecting your Yorkie against Heartworms, you should still take care to protect your dog against those pesky Mosquitoes.

Your veterinarian or your local pet supply store can offer you a variety of canine Misquitoe  repellant.   This is usually a spray.  You will noitce that a dog is most often bit where they are most vulverable...on the tummy !  This is the area in which you will want to make sure to offer protection.

We have been asked previously if clotihing on the Yorkie would protect against bites.  One must remember that just was with humans, thin clothing is no match for a hunger Misquito.

If you are in an area where these pesky creatures swam at a particular time, such as sun set, it may be best to schedule walks at an early or a later time.  Even with repellant on your Yorkie dog, a large swam attacking will be able to get a few bites in.  Remember that these pesks often hover around still water.  Avoiding swampy areas, large puddles and such places will help keep you away from swams.

Using vet approved spray will help to keep your dog comfortable and allow you to bring your dog outside to enjoy the nice weather!
