My Yorkie Ate My Necklace ! A Small, thin gold chain. What should I do?
Overview

The fact that you were able to write this to us is a good thing!  This means that the necklace did not get caught in your dog's throat and is causing breathing problems.  We would assume that if that were the case, you would rush your Yorkie to the animal hospital.

It is not uncommon for dogs to swallow non-foods, although t this is certainly not healthy for your Yorkie to swallow your necklace.

Now that you know that the necklace has indeed been swallowed and is inside your Yorkie's stomach, it is time to very carefully watch for symptoms of issues.

There is a chance that the necklace, if thin and small enough, may pass right through your dog's body.  However, you must keep a close eye on your Yorkie in case this item causes a blockage.

Because of the material, your dog will most likely pass this intact.  You should inspect each and every bowel movement.  Since this item is very thin, as you say, you will want to use a stick or other object to thoroughly check the feces.

If it does pass intact, this should happen 1 to 3 days after ingesting it.

How to Know if There is a Blockage

If this gets twisted inside the stomach or digestive system of your Yorkie, you will need to rush your dog to the animal hospital or well equipped veterinarian.   Look for:

  • Any signs of discomfort or pain - Many dogs, when in pain, will act aggressively or retreat to be alone
  • Vomiting
  • No bowel movements or walking in endless circles but not eliminating
  • Straining during elimination
  • Excessive drinking
Again, if you see any of the above symptoms, it is very important to bring your dog for treatment ASAP.

It is important to not just puppy proof a home when first bringing home a Yorkie, but also to remember that at any age this dog breed is going to be very small.   A Yorkie will find things on the floor that an owner barely notices.

Floors and areas that can be reached should be checked on a regular basis for anything that an owner even thinks may fit into a Yorkie's mouth.
